Going Out

Ask Lizzie: Getting Hit On

Q. When a stranger starts hitting on me, how can I politely tell him to leave me alone?

Lizzie: Let’s face it—when you’re at a club or bar, you’re bound to run into people who are out looking for some action, or at least a phone number. As a female, I completely understand the uncomfortable feeling that results when a stranger tries to strike up a leading conversation. On the other hand, I also know how hard it can be to approach someone you don’t know. Bottom line—there’s absolutely no need to be rude in rejecting an offer to talk or buy you a drink. If you don’t want the attention, just smile and say, “Sorry, but I’m really not interested.”

Lizzie Tip: My aunt taught me always to keep a drink in my hand. She explained that it’s a great way to refuse someone’s offer to buy you a drink. You can just say, “Thanks for the offer, but I’m all set.” (The beverage doesn’t have to be alcoholic, either.)
