Best Man
Supporting the groom as a best friend and tireless helper and keeping the ushers organized and on schedule are the best man’s primary responsibilities. If the groom chooses a female friend as his honor attendant, she is not expected to help him dress (or dance with the bride and other females). Some specific duties that may be performed by the best man:
- Organizes a pre-wedding party for the groom if there is one
- Coordinates the ushers’ gift to the groom; usually gives an individual gift to the couple
- Attends the rehearsal and rehearsal dinner
- Checks that the groom has brought the marriage license
- Makes sure all the ushers are properly attired and in place on time
- Enters the ceremony site with the groom
- Sees that the officiant receives his or her payment
- Stands near the groom during the ceremony
- Holds the bride’s wedding ring
- Helps to welcome guests
- Offers the first toast to the bride and groom at the reception
- Witnesses the signing of the marriage certificate
- Drives the bride and groom to the reception if there is no hired driver
- Dances with the bride, maid or matron of honor, mothers, and single female guests
- Helps the groom get ready for the honeymoon
- Has a car ready for the bride and groom to leave the reception
- Takes care of the groom’s wedding attire after the reception
- Coordinates the return of rented apparel
- Pays for own wedding attire and transportation to the wedding (not lodging)
